These days, without fail, when we are at a dinner party or a cocktail do with wine and lovely luscious meats, the conversation settles on an all-time favourite: Our Cholesterol Level.
We skirt over issues on sex, religion, politics. murders, pedophiles…but invariably, we return to…our cholesterol level. Everyone seem preoccupied with his or hers.
The $1 million question: What, in reality, is a healthy cholesterol level?
About 20 years ago, marathon runners were looked upon as people with enviable low cholesterol. Later, 300 was deemed as a reasonably healthy level. Then 300 made way for 250. The acceptable number nowadays seems to go lower and lower. Why is this so?
Let’s get down to facts: There is NO scientific evidence that supports the use of statins for anything but lowering levels of cholesterol. In addition, there is absolutely no evidence to prove that a lowered level of cholesterol helps to reduce the risks of strokes and/or heart attacks.
The question that now surfaces is this: Why would the medical fraternity prescribe statins? Well, because they got their instructions from the pharmaceutical industry via their pharmaceutical sales reps.
Statins are the highest selling drugs the world has known
No one knows whether a lowered cholesterol level promotes better health. However, it sure promotes the monetary health of the shareholders of the pharmaceutical giants.
The incidence of liver cancer has increased since the introduction and use of statins for lowering cholesterol levels.
Now, that may be co-incidental. However, whether or not it is so, use your judgment and common sense when using statins for lowering your cholesterol level.
First ask yourself, do you really need to lower your cholesterol level? If so, find an alternative solution to the statins. Start with your diet. Then there are medicinal herbs and nutritional supplements that can do the same job.
Why use pharmaceutical drugs, all of which have side effects if not in the short term, then always in the long term, when there are alternative ways of dealing with the challenge?
Make smarter choices. You owe it to yourself and yours.
